Sexing Goldfish

Well, from what I'm reading lately the way to sex your goldfish is....look for the nib!

No, not the yummy red licorice treats that my husband maintains are NOT licorice. I'm referring to the anal area. Apparently female goldies' anal area extrudes out (nib), and male goldies are concave in (no nib).

Sooo, it seems Blitzen is a garbage-guts female, Shebunkin is a gorgeous flowing male, and Brutus - well I'm still not settled on that!

  1. well i've been wondering bout this for a long time now what do you mean with a nib kelly?
did you read this on koko aswell? I only know who are males for sure in my tank as i allready saw their male white points on the head..but i always wondered on how to be certain which fishes are female...
I've been told you could see it from the top as girls are a bit fatter but my fishes are all that fat lol :D

  2. I've heard that too: from atop the females are more rotund, and the males sleeker.

I guess by nib they mean something akin to an "outie" belly button, but fish-size? I can see on Blitzen a tiny round protruding "button" in that area, whereas in Shebunkin it is concave inward.

Neat you've seen the white "breeding stars" (that's what I've been reading that they are commonly known as). I've never noticed them on my fish. Maybe my guys haven't finished puberty yet :)

  3. hehe funny story i have one fish who is still very young as i bought him as a kid and Í only have him for a year now. so he should be one and a half. He has been having these breeding stars since bout a 9months now. He never stops beeing horny..All the other fishes only show this during spring and when i add bloodworms to the water...
But sunny (the horny one) is so funny to see he's always harrassing the others in order to let them feel the same as he does..you know he the mating dance..
when the water has cleared up i will try to film his escapades once
